The Gagosian Gallery in Los Angeles will host an exhibition of works by famous artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. The exhibition will focus exclusively on the works Basquiat created while in Venice between November 1982 and May 1984.
Located at the gallery in Beverly Hills, Made on Market Street is curated by Fred Hoffman and Larry Gagosian and features 30 of the more than 100 works the artist created in Los Angeles, including several of his most important paintings. “Los Angeles has always been a great city for artists, and Jean-Michel seemed to find it a refreshing change from New York,” Larry Gagosian said in a statement. “Although the immensity of his talent was immediately obvious. Working with him was a highlight of my career, introducing him to Los Angeles and witnessing the amazing impact his art and legacy have had on our culture.”
The exhibition's title refers to the street where Basquiat lived during his collaboration with Gagosian in the fall of 1982. After opening his first gallery show, the young artist returned to Los Angeles the following summer, opening his own studio. “One night,” Gagosian recalls, “while Basquiat was working, he walked out into the fenced yard just outside the studio, where he encountered a homeless man sleeping. “After this incident, the fence in the yard was removed, but instead of getting rid of the wooden slats, Basquiat integrated them as supports for some of his most iconic paintings – ‘Flexible’, ‘Golden Griot’ and ‘M’ (all 1984). , all of them will be exhibited for the first time since their creation.”
