Hugh Grant has admitted that he was thinking about starting a career in politics, but he changed his mind on the advice of his former mother-in-law.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly about his role in the miniseries Regime, the UK actor was asked if he'd ever thought about getting involved in politics in real life. “It crossed my mind. But I understand that it is almost impossible to do anything. It's simply impossible," he responded.
Grant said he had discussed the matter with his wife Anna Elisabeth Eberstein's mother, Suzanne Eberstein, a former member of the Swedish parliament, who advised him not to get involved in politics because it was pure bargaining and "the subsequent insults are unthinkable."
The actor recalled how he engaged in tactical campaigning during the 2019 UK election in an attempt to stop the Conservative Party's re-election, saying he was subjected to "horrific" bullying. “What was interesting was the abuse that came from the right. I never know if they are real or bots. But they are great at what they do. And it was just terrible,” Grant said. “So, I understand that you either have to be very brave or crazy to engage in politics in the digital age.”
In Regime, Grant plays Edward Keplinger, the former chancellor of a fictional country in Central Europe. Keplinger was overthrown and imprisoned by current Chancellor Elena Wernham, played by Kate Winslet, in the six-part HBO miniseries.
