More than 200 musicians, including Billie Eilish, Nicki Minaj, J Balvin, Chuck D, Benny The Butcher, Metro Boomin, and Q-Tip, have signed an open letter from the Artist Rights Alliance demanding the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) in music.
The letter calls on “artificial intelligence developers, technology companies, platforms and digital music services” to stop using artificial intelligence technologies to “infringe on and devalue the rights of human performers.”
While the organization recognizes the potential positive impact of AI when used responsibly, it states that large companies are using the work of artists to train their AI models without permission. “AI poses a huge threat” to musicians’ rights to privacy, identity, music and livelihoods, and its financial impact on working musicians “will be catastrophic.”
“This attack on human creativity must stop,” the open letter said.
