“What is the best piece of art you have ever created?” “What is your zodiac sign?” “What’s with the mustache?” Visitors to the Salvador Dali Museum ask the famous Spanish surrealist all sorts of questions, and he answers through artificial intelligence (AI) trained on a dataset of essays and archival interviews that reflect his ideas, imagination, and humor.
In doing so, visitors “communicate” with Dali through one of his most famous surrealist composite objects, the “lobster phone.” He playfully combines a communication device and a plastic crustacean, combining two disparate objects to create a bizarre new reality, as Dali often did. The replica stands just a few feet from the real lobster phone on display at the St. Petersburg, Fla., museum, one of 10 such working phones built in the 1930s.
The Ask Dali AI is not a life-size digital twin. Here it's just Dali's voice coming through a lobster phone equipped with a microphone. For accessibility, his answers appear on the monitor as subtitles under an image inspired by his signature long mustache.
