Taylor Swift's latest album sells 1.6 million copies in one day

14:20, April 22

Taylor Swift's latest album has sold 1.6 million copies in the US in one day, including 600,000 vinyl copies, making The Tortured Poets Department (TTPD) one of the best-selling music releases since Nielsen Luminate began tracking album sales in 1991 year, reports FT.

Swift's 11th compilation album has broken records since its release on Friday, selling 1.6 million copies in one day, according to Nielsen Luminate. About 1.4 million of that total comes from sales of traditional formats such as vinyl, CDs, and cassettes; an unusual achievement in a country where streaming is the dominant form of music listening.

On Spotify, “The Tortured Poets Department” was streamed over 300 million times worldwide on its first day.

At 34, Swift is the biggest star in the music business in decades. Sales reached levels not seen since the 1990s, when the popularity of compact discs left the US music business flush with cash.

“Based on first-day activity, it is clear that TTPD will debut with 2 million copies [in its first week],” wrote music industry blog Hits Daily Double.

It will be only the third album to reach this level since Nielsen began tracking sales in 1991. Previously, Adele's 25 sold 3.4 million albums in its first week in 2015, and NSYNC's No Strings Attached sold 2.4 million in 2000.

Other big releases this year include Beyoncé's Cowboy Carter, which sold 407,000 in its first week, and Ariana Grande's Eternal Sunshine, which sold 227,000 in its first week.
