Joe Cocker dead at 70

Joe Cocker has died after a battle with lung cancer. He was 70. A long-time US resident, he died at home in Colorado, Yorkshirepost reported.

The star, who rose to fame in the Sixties, had hits with The Beatles’ song With A Little Help From My Friends and later, in a duet with Jennifer Warnes, Up Where We Belong

The singer from Sheffield had a career lasting more than 40 years with hits including You Are So Beautiful and Up Where We Belong.

His success as a blues and rock singer lasted decades, with his most famous hit, a cover of the Beatles' With a Little Help from My Friends, reaching number one in 1968. 

He was also known for his version of You Are So Beautiful in 1975 and Up Where We Belong in 1983, a duet with Jennifer Warnes which won a Grammy. 

Cocker was nominated for a Brit Award for Best British Male in 1993 and, in 2007, the rock legend was awarded the OBE for services to the music industry.

Sony Music released a statement, confirming Cocker's death.

It said: 'John Robert Cocker, known to family, friends, his community and fans around the world as Joe Cocker, passed away on December 22, 2014 after a hard fought battle with small cell lung cancer. Mr. Cocker was 70 years old.
