Serj Tankian wanted to leave System of a Down, he says

Serj Tankian wanted to leave System of a Down and suggested that the group members find a replacement for him.

Tankian shared his memories of the meeting in the band's management office in late 2017 in his upcoming memoir, Down With The System, which Rolling Stone published an exclusive excerpt from.

“Even when the band was writing new music, I wasn’t particularly satisfied with the life cycle of a major label artist,” Tankian admits in his book.

At the meeting, Tankian told bandmates Daron Malakian, Shavo Odadjian, and John Dolmayan: “I don’t want to hold you guys back. This is your dream. This is what you have worked for your entire life. You deserve it. I think you should find a new singer... I will talk about it positively, I will make it clear to you that I support you."

Tankian admits that his bandmates were "absolutely shocked" by his announcement. But they considered this option, going so far as to try out a new singer who was ultimately rejected as they felt he couldn't "scream and growl."

“In recent years, I have suggested another friend to them as a potential replacement that they should seriously consider,” he adds. "But I don't think they ever will."
