House of Cards and The Wire actor Reg E. Cathey dies aged 59

House of Cards and The Wire actor Reg E. Cathey dies aged 59 at his home in NYC after battling lung cancer, DailyMail has learned. The House of Cards actor has been battling lung cancer.  

But the exact cause of his death has not been released to the public.

Reg was a 2015 Emmy winner and three-time nominee for outstanding guest actor on the hit political drama House of Cards. 

He played Freddy Hayes—the owner of a BBQ restaurant.

The actor also had significant supporting roles on HBO's The Wire and Oz.  

Co-stars, co-workers, friends, and fans took to Twitter to share their kind words about the Alabama native.

Luke Cage's Mike Colter tweeted, 'Go gentle into that good night my brother. It was an honor spending time with you on set. Getting to know you as a person and an artist. You will be missed. Condolences to your family. I salute you.' 

While the legendary Samuel L. Jackson said, 'Shattered at the loss of Reg E. Cathey! Brilliant actor, humorist, and friend! Irreplaceable! The ancestors about to be challenged!!'
