“World's loneliest elephant” is released from captivity in Pakistan, thanks to Cher campaign

11:21, November 30

An elephant named Kaavan, which is called "the world's loneliest elephant," has been sent from Pakistan to Cambodia, The Guardian reported.

The animal was kept in harsh conditions at the Islamabad Zoo for 35 years.

Kaavan had a mate, Saheli, which died of an infection in 2012. Kaavan had a hard time getting over this, as it suffered from mental disorder and becoming overweight.

In 2016, a campaign was launched to save Kaavan, and one of the initiators of this campaign is renowned American Armenian singer Cher.

In May 2020, and thanks to animal rights activists, the Supreme Court of Pakistan ruled to shut the Islamabad Zoo and release Kaavan.

A documentary about the story of "the world's loneliest elephant" shall be released next year, Cher said on Twitter.
