Composer Mikis Theodorakis, who has gained worldwide fame as the creator of classical music, as well as songs and music for folk dances, died at the age of 96, CNN Greece reported.
Theodorakis wrote the melody for the sirtaki dance shown in the 1964 film "Zorba The Greek" by Mihalis Kakogiannis.
Moreover, Theodorakis has written music for several other films by Kakogiannis, as well as other directors.
Along with music, Theodorakis was actively involved in political activities, before the black colonels came to power in Greece, he was a member of parliament from the United Left Democratic Party.
The performance of Theodorakis's music was prohibited, and he himself was imprisoned. In 1970 the composer was exiled from Greece and lived in France for several years. After the fall of the black colonels' regime, he returned to his homeland, was re-elected to parliament, and in 1990-1992 was a member of the Greek government as a minister without a portfolio.
