Sona Abrahamyan on her life in United States, risky decisions and The Other Side of America

17:31, December 14

It's been already two years since journalist and TV host Sona Abrahamyan moved to the United States along with her husband, hip-hop musician and producer David Miroyan. Like many people planning to start a new life away from their homeland, Sona and David have also faced many challenges. Now Sona has started a new project, "The Other Side of America," through which she is trying to help others learn more about the States and make it easier to adapt in a foreign country.

"When you move to a new country in your 30s, it surely makes it more difficult to go out of your comfort zone and get adapted in a new society. Meanwhile, that brings new interests to your life, because when you leave your comfort zone, it opens new opportunities in front of you", Sona says. "The same difficulties arise in personal life. In Yerevan, where you are surrounded by family members and relatives, it is much easier to solve any problem, but here you have to overcome everything yourself, combining personal life and work."

Sona does not deny that moving to Los Angeles after hosting a number of popular projects on Armenian Public Television was a risky decision, but she believes that sometimes change is necessary.

"Of course, every global change in life is a risky step, and as we get older it also brings a lot more responsibility and, as a result, fears grow, but I also think these changes are necessary-whether they are positive or negative-because they also bring new opportunities."

To make the moving easier for other Armenians, Sona started The Other Side of America- a project, which, according to the journalist, has already gained a large scale of audience not only from Armenia, but also from the States.

"I got the idea for this project when I realized that we were going to stay in the U.S. for a while. And just then we ran into a lot of problems and questions that needed to be solved, so I started gathering as much information as I could. And one day I realized that I had become quite informed in many areas, so I started thinking about sharing my knowledge that would be useful to other people who were planning to settle in the States. Becides, people in Armenia have rather stereotypical image about America, and I decided to bring all the pluses and minuses of this country with an eye of a newcomer. Now, as I have gained a lot of followers on YouTube and Instagram, I try to bring this project on a new level. For me it is also a new approach to journalism, cause with all this developments of digital technologies and social media, the rules of the journalism have also changed and now you should always follow the rythm".

As for visiting Armenia, Sona says they have such plans in the near future.

"It's exciting what changes I will notice after these two years, although I'm sure the changes won't be very global, because after all two years is not a long period of time. However, when you live in a different society for a certain time, it always has some impact on you. I, personally, notice these changes inside myself," she adds.
