The Cannes Film Festival has become a "return" to Hollywood for Hollywood actor Johnny Depp, writes The Daily Mail.
The 76th festival kicked off Tuesday night with the premiere of the Louis XV-period drama Jeanne du Barry, in which Depp plays the King of France.
Depp’s appearing on the red carpet was met with loud applause and shouts of support.
Cannes marked the first major event since he won a defamation lawsuit against him by ex-wife Amber Heard, who had accused Depp of violence and cruelty.
Now, Cannes has become the sweetest excuse for the 59-year-old actor, who couldn't hide his excitement about returning to the Hollywood fold after earlier turning down several projects in court, including Fantastic Beasts.
At the end of the film, the audience gave Depp a standing ovation for seven minutes.
A crowd of fans chanted "Johnny" as Depp signed autographs and returned to the spotlight, although his presence at Cannes was the subject of heated debate.
As always, the event attracted the attention of celebrities, including Brie Larson, Uma Thurman, Elle Fanning, and Helen Mirren.
Michael Douglas, who was to receive the Palme d'Or award at the opening ceremony, walked the red carpet with his wife Catherine Zeta-Jones and daughter Carys Zeta Douglas.
Kill Bill idol Uma Thurman, 53, arrived at one of the world's most prestigious red carpets with her son Levon Roan Thurman-Hawke. Uma looked incredible in an elegant pink and red dress.
