Meryl Streep has returned to the Cannes Film Festival after 35 years. The three-time Oscar-winning actress received the Palme d'Or during the opening ceremony of this event. The award was presented to her by French film actress Juliette Binoche.

Streep teared up during her speech as she talked about her last visit to the Cannes Film Festival and how she thought her career was over. Luckily she was wrong! She last attended the festival in 1989, with the movie Evil Angels.

“I was already a mother of three, about to turn 40, and I thought my career was over,” Streep said. “For actresses of that time, this was very real. And the only reason I'm here tonight is because of the very talented artists I've worked with... I'm grateful you didn't get sick of my face and get sick from the train. My mother, who is usually right about everything, said to me: ‘Meryl, my dear, you'll see. Everything happens so quickly. Very fast.’ And so it is. Except for my speech, which is too long,” the actress noted.
