Mariah Carey's mother, sister die the same day

Mariah Carey's mother and sister died on the same day.

"My heart is broken over the loss of my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day," the singer said in a statement, as quoted by CNN.

The pop star did not provide details about the causes of death of Patricia Carey and Alison Carey. Patricia Carey was reportedly 87 years old. Alison Carey was 63.

"I feel blessed to have been able to spend the last week with my mother before she passed away. I appreciate everyone's love and support and respect for my privacy during this difficult time."

Patricia Carey was an opera singer and vocal coach. She was married to Mariah Carey's father, Alfred Roy, with whom she separated when Mariah Carey was three years old. Roy died in 2002.

In her 2020 memoir, Mariah Carey opened up about her “complicated” relationship with her mother, writing that “like so many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother was fraught with contradictions and competing realities.”

Mariah Carey has reportedly become estranged from her sister, Alison Carey, who sued her in 2021 for intentional infliction of emotional distress over certain points in Mariah Carey’s memoir.

Alison Carey claimed that her younger sister used the book as a means to “humiliate and embarrass” her.

Mariah Carey has never filed a legal response to the lawsuit.
