Oscar shortlists announced in 10 categories

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the shortlists in 10 categories for the upcoming 97th Academy Awards.

“Emilia Perez” received six nominations, including makeup, sound, original score, international film, and two for original song (“El Mal” and “Mi Camino”). This musical was followed by another newcomer to the race, Universal Pictures’ “Wicked,” which received four nominations, Variety reports.

Advance voting is open for animated short film, documentary feature, documentary short film, international film, live action short film, makeup and hairstyling, original score, original song, sound, and visual effects.

Oscar voting to determine nominees in all 23 categories opens on January 8 and closes on January 12. The nominees will be announced on January 17.

The shortlist includes five movies that have won the 2024 Student Academy Award: The Guardian (documentary short), Goodbye, My World and Origami (animated shorts), and Countryman and The Crust (live-action shorts).

Conan O'Brien will host the 2025 Academy Awards ceremony on March 2.
