Emir Kusturica considers Anora victory at Oscars 2025 ‘a huge mistake’

Filmmaker Emir Kusturica considers the victory of the film Anora at the Oscars 2025 "a huge mistake."

"It's a huge mistake to think that Anora is a good film. There is nothing there! No hero, no statement, no human story. There is only a rich son who fell in love with a prostitute, and parents who do not want him to be with her. That's it! How did such a film become the winner of the Cannes festival?! I don't know!.." the Serbian filmmaker said in an interview with AiF.

"The president of the jury was the director [i.e. American Greta Gerwig] who made the film Barbie, and probably thought only about the market. She does not even understand that she made a mistake by giving the main prize to Anora. This is a mistake from a moral and aesthetic point of view,” Kusturica added.

Anora received five Oscars, including for Best Film and Best Director.
