Turks killed 8 of her children, while she laid there and then they left the 9th child to starve to death: Joe Manganiello tells the story of his Armenian Great-Grandmother
16:04 24 April, 2025American actor Joe Manganiello, who had recently learned about his Armenian roots, spoke in an interview with the famous Armenian-American journalist and producer Sona Hovhannisyan about the brutal story of his great-grandmother, who survived the Armenian Genocide.
The actor said that his grandmother’s name was Terviz Darakjian and she was originally from Harpoot, Western Armenia. “In 1915, under the veil World War I, the Ottomon Turks came into Harpoot and just killed everyone. Her husband, I believe, was murdered before they took all the man way and said: 'Oh, you have to do these military things over there,' so they kind of took all the men away and killed them and seperated them from the women and children, so they could come into the villages and, you know, do what they want.”

The actor’s great-grandmother was shot, but she did not die. "And while she was on the ground the turks killed 8 of her children, while she laid there, and then they left the 9th child to starve to death. And she got up off the ground and took a piece of clothing from each of the children and then strapped the baby to her back and she made it out of the village," the actor said.
However, Manganiello's great-grandmother's suffering did not end there. On the way to cross the river, her 9th child also died, drowning in the river.
Earlier, in an interview with People, Manganiello told that his great-grandmother, so wounded, lived in a cave with other refugees until she was found by German soldiers.
