Melania Trump vs. Ivanka Trump: First lady steals the spotlight on UK visit  

First Lady Melania Trump is once again capturing global media attention as she accompanies President Donald Trump on a state visit to the United Kingdom. Unlike the 2019 visit, Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared Kushner will not be joining the trip—a marked absence given their prominent role in White House affairs during the first term.

According to the Daily Mail, Ivanka has stepped back from politics, choosing a quieter life in Miami focused on family and personal projects. For Melania, this reportedly comes as a welcome relief. Sources close to the First Lady say that her relationship with her stepdaughter has always been tense. In her biography The Art of Her Deal: The Untold Story of Melania Trump, author Mary Jordan notes that Melania harbored “significant antipathy” toward Ivanka, who she felt was overly assertive in seeking space alongside the President and effectively acting as a “second First Lady.”

Insiders suggest tensions intensified when Ivanka allegedly proposed transforming the traditional First Lady’s Office in the East Wing into a “First Family Office,” a move that infuriated Melania. One source close to the White House remarked, “Ivanka will always be a thorn in her side.”

The conflict reached a peak in 2019 when Ivanka and Jared insisted on accompanying the President and First Lady during the official Buckingham Palace greeting ceremony. Protocol dictated otherwise, and Melania—known for her meticulous attention to detail—stood firm. Former press secretary Stephanie Grisham recalls Melania stating at the time, “It’s inappropriate. It should be just the President and me.”

Despite the tension, the broader Trump family—including Donald Jr., Eric, Lara, Tiffany, and, of course, Ivanka with Jared—attended the state banquet, generating considerable media buzz.

Grisham notes that Melania has long held an admiration for the British royal family. In her memoir I’ll Take Your Questions Now (2021), she recounted how, after a tea with then-Prince Charles, Donald Trump complained that the conversation had been “all about climate change.” Grisham writes, “Mr. Trump was very displeased, but Mrs. Trump just laughed, saying, ‘Oh yes, he was very bored,’ while clearly enjoying herself.” She also notes that Melania and Charles continued corresponding after the meeting.

This year, the dynamic is different. The White House confirms that Tiffany Trump and her husband Michael Boulos are the only other family members joining the visit. Ivanka and Jared remain in the United States.

For Melania, this is an opportunity to step forward as a standalone figure. Her itinerary includes a private audience with Queen Camilla and a visit to Windsor Castle, where she will be accompanied by Catherine, Princess of Wales.

Observers are already calling the visit a “defining moment” for the First Lady: poised fashion choices, gloves, impeccable posture—and no competition in sight.
