Plump lips and botox: In Trump’s world, fashion and makeup become political

Long, wavy blonde hair, bold makeup, and cosmetic procedures have become a political statement in the world of Donald Trump. Melissa Rein Lively, 40, founder of the PR agency America First, describes her look as “natural” — one that aligns perfectly with the ideals of the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement.

“It’s not just politics. It’s friendships, connections, a team. This MAGA look signals to others that you’re on the same side,” she told AFP.

These women are devout Christians and staunch supporters of traditional values, but their ambition and appearance have made them highly visible and influential figures.

Not Just Fashion — A Weapon in the Gender War

MAGA women aren’t shy about their appearance. Long hair, skirts and dresses, bold makeup with contouring, and perfectly groomed eyebrows make their look instantly recognizable. Many also opt for cosmetic interventions, including fillers, plastic surgery, fuller lips, and sculpted cheekbones.

“Thinking this is just about fashion is a mistake,” says UCLA gender studies professor Juliet Williams. “The MAGA look became part of a larger strategy — the movement was able to help bring Trump back to the White House in part because of women’s visual identity.”

Rein Lively cites Ivanka and Lara Trump as her role models. “I don’t do this for anyone but myself. It’s all my choice,” she says, listing her daily beauty rituals: workouts, skincare, Botox, and regular salon visits.

Discipline as Self-Expression

For young White House aides like Karoline Leavitt, the look is both discipline and a display of allegiance. Even high heels remain part of their attire during busy, active days.

“This isn’t about fashion sacrifice, it’s war paint,” Williams explains. “They embrace a system that ultimately works against them.”

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem is another striking example of the so-called “MAGA face.” New York dermatologist Daniel Belkin notes the irony: “They oppose gender-affirming care for transgender people, yet undergo it themselves.” Noem has also faced media and pop culture criticism, including parodies on South Park highlighting her cosmetic procedures.

For MAGA women, hairstyle, makeup, and style are far more than aesthetics. They are symbols of allegiance, political signals, and tools for self-expression. Their appearance is part of a broader strategy, combining faith, ambition, and public presence to make them visible players on the political stage.
