The “bizarre” reason Queen Elizabeth II wore seven different outfits on Christmas

Christmas in the royal household wasn’t always a quiet, family affair. Behind the scenes, the day was governed by strict rules—even dictating the number of outfits the Queen would wear. The late Queen Elizabeth II would change into up to seven outfits in a single day, not out of vanity or extravagance, but due to royal protocol.

The rule required that the monarch never wear the same outfit in front of different groups of guests, ensuring that everyone felt equally important.

Angela Kelly, the Queen’s longtime personal assistant and advisor who worked with Elizabeth for over 30 years, explained in her book The Other Side of the Coin: The Queen, The Dresser and the Wardrobe: "The Queen was just as busy as she would be in London, with more guests to entertain. There could be five, sometimes even seven outfit changes in a single day."

Every appearance, whether private or official, was carefully coordinated. Kelly would present sketches of gowns to the Queen for approval, and once an outfit was greenlit, notes were left in the Dresser’s corridor to ensure ladies-in-waiting and guests could coordinate their own attire. This meticulous system highlighted the Queen’s respect for tradition, order, and hospitality.

Her attention to detail was especially evident in her final Christmas broadcasts. In 2021, following the passing of Prince Philip, the Queen wore a bold red dress designed by Kelly, paired with her sapphire chrysanthemum brooch—a piece she had worn during her honeymoon in 1947 and on milestone anniversaries. While valued at over $1.3 million, its emotional significance was priceless.

Earlier broadcasts also reflected her thoughtful approach: in 2020, she chose a royal purple dress with a brooch from the Queen Mother and included a photo of her husband to symbolize resilience during the pandemic. In 2019, she wore a blue cashmere dress with a sapphire-and-diamond brooch gifted by Prince Albert to Queen Victoria.
