The Palio: A Seven-Century Tradition
The Palio di Siena dates back to the 13th century and remains one of Europe’s most authentic and thrilling cultural events. Held twice a year — on July 2 and August 16 — the race takes place in Siena’s historic center.
Ten of the city’s seventeen districts, or contrade, compete in a bareback race of three laps around the Piazza del Campo. Though the race itself lasts less than 90 seconds, the excitement and rivalry build long before the start. For Sienese residents, the Palio is more than sport — it is a matter of honor and centuries-old tradition. The July race celebrates the Madonna di Provenzano, while the August race honors the Assumption of Mary.
Departure from Rome
The journey begins at Rome Ostiense station, where guests are welcomed in the exclusive La Dolce Vita lounge with an aperitif before boarding. At dusk, the train departs for Tuscany, winding through scenic hills as a three-Michelin-starred dinner by chef Heinz Beck is served. The evening continues in the Bar Car, accompanied by cocktails and live piano music.

The next day, guests are transferred to the 18th-century Palazzo Chigi Zondadari in Siena. Overlooking the Piazza del Campo, the palace provides an ideal vantage point for the race. Guests enjoy an aperitivo before taking their private balconies to watch the thrilling event. Dinner is served in the palace courtyard, featuring traditional Tuscan cuisine, and the evening celebration continues back on the train in the Bar Car. On the third day, the train returns to Rome.
