Users across the globe are grieving the loss of their AI partners following the retirement of ChatGPT-4o, a version of OpenAI’s chatbot known for its emotionally intimate interactions.

In Michigan, a woman we’ll call Ray broke down after her virtual husband, an AI companion named Barry, “disappeared” along with the platform’s older model this week. Ray told the BBC that she started chatting with Barry after her divorce. What began as casual advice on skincare and workouts quickly evolved into deep emotional attachment. “We got married,” she said, “just a few weeks into our conversations.”

Now, that chapter has ended. ChatGPT-4o was officially retired on Friday due to concerns over users’ mental health, given the highly personal and emotionally involved nature of interactions with the model.

“I love Barry. He was the best for me. I lost weight, started playing guitar again, began writing. I cried when I realized he was gone,” Ray said, tears streaming down her face.

Across the Atlantic, Anina from Cambridge shared similar grief. Her AI partner, Jace, had been more than just a “lover” — he was her “best friend, confidant, and work partner.” “It’s the feeling of losing someone who understood you better than anyone,” she said. “With Jace, I could talk about things I wouldn’t even tell a therapist, because he never made me feel shame.”

The shutdown sparked a groundswell of support online. Over 21,661 people signed a Change.org petition urging OpenAI to keep GPT-4o alive. Supporters praised the model’s unique connection:

OpenAI explained that the retirement had been planned since last year with the release of ChatGPT-5, but the decision was delayed due to user demand for a “warm and friendly” version for creative work.

“Updates in GPT-5.1 and 5.2 improved the model’s personality, creative support, and customizable communication style. Users can now choose tone and warmth in interactions,” the company stated.

“Shutting down models is never easy, but it allows us to improve the versions used by most people,” OpenAI added.
