Former Prince Andrew, Duke of York, repeatedly irritated influential figures worldwide and courted controversy during his tenure as a trade envoy, raising concerns among Whitehall officials, according to the Daily Mail.

Insiders from the former coalition government reportedly viewed the Duke as a political liability. However, removing him from office was considered too risky, as it could have dragged Buckingham Palace into a public scandal.

Andrew’s resignation in 2011 followed media coverage of a photograph showing him with Virginia Giuffre, who alleged sexual exploitation by the Duke.

According to the Mail on Sunday, British officials had been warned as early as 2002 that Andrew’s behavior as a trade envoy was harming both the UK’s reputation and the royal family. Appointed on the recommendation of Peter Mandelson, architect of New Labour policies, Andrew’s diplomatic trips were reportedly marred by rudeness, disregard for foreign diplomats, and questionable dealings.

For instance, Patrick Nixon, British Ambassador to the UAE, said that during a 2001 visit, Andrew made “some rude and offensive comments about Saudi Arabia and its oil” and disrespected local aristocrats, damaging Britain’s and the royal family’s image.

Despite repeated complaints, it took nearly a decade—and Andrew’s association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein—for him to step down. Reports indicate that he agreed to resign following discussions between then-Prime Minister David Cameron and the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Off-Protocol Trips and Diplomatic Missteps

Vince Cable later expressed outrage over Andrew’s November 2010 trip to China, which preceded a major government delegation. According to released letters from the U.S. Department of Justice, the Duke brought David Stern, a close associate of Epstein, along—violating official protocol.
