Stephen Colbert and his son Peter McGee are developing a new film based on The Lord of the Rings for Warner Bros. Pictures.

The film, tentatively titled The Lord of the Rings: Shadows of the Past, is set for release in 2027 and will be based on six early chapters of The Fellowship of the Ring that were omitted from Peter Jackson's 2001 film adaptation.

The film is set 14 years after Frodo's death. Sam, Mary, and Pippin revisit the path of their first adventure, while Sam's daughter Eleanor uncovers a long-held secret as she tries to understand why the War of the Ring was almost lost before it even began.

Philippa Boyens, co-writer of Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, is working on the script with Colbert and her son. Colbert has previously collaborated with Jackson, playing a small role in "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" and directing the short film "Darylgorn" with the cast of "The Lord of the Rings" films.
