Fans of The Lord of the Rings should brace for a major change: the iconic role of Aragorn will be recast in the upcoming film The Hunt for Gollum. The news was confirmed by Andy Serkis, who is directing the project and will once again reprise his role as Gollum, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“We’re recasting that role and are currently searching for an actor,” Serkis said, noting that speculation around the casting has already been building. The decision aligns with the film’s timeline, as the story takes place between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, when Aragorn is significantly younger.

In the original trilogy, Aragorn was portrayed by Viggo Mortensen, who was around 40 at the time of filming. Now 67, his return in the same capacity is considered unlikely. Mortensen has previously said he wouldn’t rule out involvement, but only if it felt true to the story.

The Hunt for Gollum will explore events that unfold before the main films, following Aragorn and Gandalf as they search for Gollum to uncover more about Bilbo’s ring. Ian McKellen is also set to return as Gandalf.

Additionally, Elijah Wood has hinted he may reprise his role as Frodo, though no official confirmation has been made.

The film is being produced by Peter Jackson alongside Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens – the team behind the original trilogy. The premiere is currently scheduled for December 2027.
