With a career spanning nearly eight decades, Bhosle was regarded as a cultural icon across India, shaping the sound of multiple generations of cinema audiences. She also gained international recognition through collaborations with British pop star Boy George.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to her legacy, praising her immense contribution to the country’s cultural heritage. He said her “remarkable musical journey, spanning decades, enriched our cultural legacy and touched countless hearts around the world.”
Throughout her career, Bhosle received widespread acclaim, including two Grammy nominations, India’s highest cinematic honor the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, and the Padma Vibhushan, the country’s second-highest civilian award.
“Whether through her soulful melodies or vibrant compositions, her voice always carried a timeless brilliance,” Modi added.
Bhosle was the younger sister of legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar. According to her granddaughter, she was recently admitted to a private hospital in Mumbai with a chest infection and severe exhaustion.
Tributes have poured in from across the world. Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan wrote that her voice “was one of the pillars of Indian cinema and will continue to resonate across the world for centuries to come.”
