Kim Kardashian demands $145,000 in legal costs after mistaken identity photo scandal sparks counter-lawsuit

Kim Kardashian is facing renewed controversy after seeking to recover approximately $145,000 in legal expenses following a legal dispute sparked by an alleged mistaken identity on social media.

The case stems from a February 2024 incident in which Kardashian mistakenly posted a photograph of a New York man, Ivan Cantu, during her criminal justice reform advocacy efforts. The image was incorrectly linked to a Texas death row inmate of the same name, who was later executed after being convicted of a 2000 double murder.

The post, which was seen by hundreds of millions of followers, quickly went viral before being removed once the error was identified.

Cantu later filed a lawsuit, arguing that the post caused significant harm to his reputation. He claimed he was publicly portrayed as a convicted criminal at a sensitive time in his life, leading to anxiety, depression, and lasting reputational damage.

In court filings, Cantu also argued that Kardashian, who “was born into wealth and luxury” and earns substantial income through social media and brand partnerships, should have been more aware of the impact of her online activity. He further noted that while she frequently speaks about social causes, much of her content focuses on sponsored posts and celebrity lifestyle material.

Kardashian’s legal team described the incident as a “simple mistake” connected to her involvement in criminal justice reform advocacy. They stated that the incorrect image was removed promptly once the error was discovered.

Cantu’s lawsuit included claims of defamation, emotional distress, invasion of privacy, negligence, and false light portrayal, with demands for both compensatory and punitive damages, describing the incident as “shocking and humiliating.”

His attorney argued that public figures like Kardashian should understand the power and consequences of social media posts and the potential for real harm to private individuals.

However, the court previously dismissed the case, ruling that the plaintiff had not demonstrated sufficient evidence of harm caused by the post. Following that ruling, Kardashian reportedly filed a counterclaim seeking reimbursement of legal costs estimated at around $145,000.

Cantu’s lawyers are now asking the court to reject the financial demand, arguing that the initial mistake and its consequences have already caused reputational and emotional damage to their client.
