British humour at its finest

During the formal dinner, which marked the first state reception of Donald Trump’s second presidential term and was dedicated to the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States, King Charles III set a light, elegant, and distinctly ironic tone for the evening.

The monarch smiled as he remarked that this year’s celebration was “considerably more pleasant than the Boston Tea Party.” This subtle reference to one of the key moments of the American Revolution drew laughter from the guests.

A reminder of 1814: the White House and British “renovation”

Charles also did not miss the opportunity to joke about less comfortable chapters of shared history. “I regret to note that the British once made their own small attempt at development and renovation of the White House in 1814.” The room again burst into laughter, and Trump himself visibly appreciated the trademark British self-deprecating humour.

Another highlight of the evening was Charles’s reaction to Trump’s recent statement about the United States’ role in Europe’s liberation. “I dare say that if it weren’t for us, you would now be speaking French.” The joke landed strongly and drew laughter even from the president.

But the biggest surprise of the evening was a truly symbolic gift from the King — a large golden bell from the turret of the British submarine HMS Trump, which had taken part in battles in the Pacific during the Second World War.

Charles presented it as a sign of the historical bond between the two nations, saying: “Let it stand as a symbol of our shared history and a brighter future. And if you ever need to reach us — just ring.”

Trump responded with praise

The U.S. president also returned the compliment, praising the King’s speech to Congress: “He delivered a magnificent speech. I was even a little jealous.” Trump later added: “He made the Democrats stand and applaud. I’ve never managed that.”
