22:22 11 May, 2026Elon Musk has once again sparked global travel frenzy after sharing a viral video on X (formerly Twitter) featuring the Swiss village of Lauterbrunnen. The clip, originally posted by creator James Lucas, showcased the iconic Staubbach Falls, which cascade nearly 300 meters down dramatic cliffs.
The post quickly exploded online, racking up more than 50 million views and triggering waves of admiration. Many users described the destination as looking “AI-generated” or like “the perfect desktop wallpaper.”
But the viral attention has also raised serious concerns. Lauterbrunnen’s mayor, Karl Näfplin, warned that a sudden influx of tourists could overwhelm the small alpine village, which has a population of only around 2,300 residents.
According to local officials, social media exposure — especially from high-profile figures like Musk — can instantly transform peaceful destinations into international tourism hotspots, often faster than infrastructure can handle. Lauterbrunnen is already dealing with overcrowded viewing areas, narrow roads, and tourists trespassing on private property for photos.
Authorities emphasize that tourism itself is welcome, but the speed and scale of growth are becoming problematic. Visitors are being encouraged to use public transportation, respect private property, and help preserve the area’s cleanliness.
Similar issues have emerged elsewhere in Switzerland. In Iseltwald, for example, officials introduced an access fee for a popular lakeside pier after viral fame from social media and television dramatically increased visitor numbers.
With Lauterbrunnen now under a global spotlight, discussions are reportedly underway about whether fees may eventually be introduced for certain attractions, including Staubbach Falls.
The situation once again highlights how a single social media post — especially from someone as influential as Elon Musk — can rapidly reshape the future of a small destination.
