“Tell Her I Only Wear SKIMS”: Woman Convicted in Deadly Crash Says She Wants Kim Kardashian as Her Lawyer

The case of Mackenzie Shirilla, the young woman convicted over the deaths of her boyfriend and his friend in a high-profile crash, is back in the spotlight following the release of a new Netflix documentary. And now, it’s not just the case itself drawing attention, but also an unexpected statement she made from prison.

PEOPLE obtained audio from a jail phone call in which Mackenzie says she wants Kim Kardashian to represent her.

“I want Kim Kardashian to be my lawyer,” she says during the conversation.

When the person on the call suggested Kim may have already seen coverage of the case, Shirilla responded that she hoped so. The conversation also included references to Kardashian helping “innocent people get out of prison.”

At one point, Mackenzie even joked: “Tell her I buy all her SKIMS and I only wear SKIMS.”

The 21-year-old is currently serving her sentence in Ohio. In 2023, she was convicted of murder in connection with a 2022 crash that killed her 20-year-old boyfriend Dominic Russo and their 19-year-old friend Davion Flanagan.

Prosecutors argued that Shirilla intentionally drove into a wall at nearly 100 mph following relationship issues with Russo.

Mackenzie has continued to deny intentionally causing the crash. She claims she does not remember the moment of impact and says she lost consciousness due to POTS syndrome, a condition that can cause dizziness and fainting.

Public interest in the case surged again after the release of the Netflix documentary The Crash, which features interviews with Shirilla’s family, relatives of the victims and Mackenzie herself from prison. In the film, she says she feels “an overwhelming amount of guilt” toward the victims’ families.

However, newly released phone recordings sparked another wave of debate after Shirilla stated she did not believe she needed rehabilitation and expressed fears that by the time she could potentially be released, she would be “too old” to have children.

Shirilla will not become eligible for parole until 2037.
