But since most luxury lovers don’t have spare millions to spend, a new trend has emerged in the fashion industry — renting the world’s most unattainable handbags for hundreds of dollars a month. New York-based service Vivrelle, one of the favorite luxury rental platforms among American influencers, has launched an exclusive membership tier called “Privée.” For $800 a month, top-tier clients gain access to a curated collection of 500 iconic Hermès bags, including Birkin, Kelly, and Constance models sourced from auctions.

The founders describe the concept as the “democratization of luxury,” though collectors and experts remain unconvinced.

“Six months of this membership could buy you a real vintage Hermès Kelly bag,” noted New York vintage collector Sana Roychoudhury in an interview with The Wall Street Journal.

Other systems exist as well. The British platform By Rotation operates without a subscription model but allows owners to rent out their Birkin bags for up to $500 per day, depending on size and rarity.

The reason the rental market is thriving lies in Hermès’ famously engineered exclusivity. To obtain the coveted handbag in-store, customers must:

1. Spend years building a relationship with a personal sales associate.
2. Invest the equivalent of a full annual salary on the brand’s clothing, shoes, and homeware to demonstrate “loyalty.”
3. Adhere to an unspoken dress code (TikTok influencers share tips suggesting you should dress “elegant but understated” for a chance at approval).

Public reaction to renting these iconic bags ranges from irony to outright disbelief. Fashion critics warn that social media has transformed the Birkin from a symbol of “quiet luxury” into a loud, overexposed pop-culture prop used for status signaling.

Meanwhile, whispers in fashion circles suggest that influencers have been circulating the same bags just to film unboxing videos. Reddit users remain skeptical: “I don’t get the rental hype.
