“Forty Thousand Bottles of Stalin”: Secret Wine Cellar of Soviet Leader Uncovered in Georgia

Around forty thousand rare French and Georgian wines — some more than two hundred years old — were linked to the name of Joseph Stalin. Now Georgia has, for the first time, opened access to the legendary cellar and is preparing to send its contents to an international auction.
The collection is considered one of the most extraordinary in the post-Soviet space. It includes both rare Georgian wines and French rarities, including bottles from famous Bordeaux estates. Some examples date back to the early nineteenth century and are more than two hundred years old.
According to Reuters, the history of the collection dates back to the Russian Empire. A significant part originally belonged to Emperor Alexander the Third and Emperor Nicholas the Second. After the Revolution of 1917, the tsarist wine reserves were nationalized by the Soviet authorities. Later, they came under the stewardship of Joseph Stalin, who was known as a wine enthusiast and gradually expanded the collection with his favorite Georgian varieties.
Today, Georgian authorities intend to turn this historical heritage into an investment in the future. The collection is planned to be partially sold at an international auction, with proceeds used to establish a specialized winemaking school. Project participants say the sale will attract collectors from around the world and further highlight Georgia’s status as one of the oldest winemaking countries on the planet, with a history of viticulture spanning around eight thousand years.
However, the main intrigue is still ahead. Experts must assess the condition of each bottle. Some wines may have been perfectly preserved, while others may have lost their qualities over decades of storage. Yet even if part of the contents is no longer suitable for tasting, the historical value of the collection remains immense.
American collector Victor Chen, who specially traveled to Tbilisi to see the legendary cellar, compared the experience to an adventure film: “It is like the moment when Indiana Jones opens an ancient cave. Anything could be there.” And it is precisely this mixture of mystery, history, and rare wines that makes Stalin’s collection one of the most discussed discoveries of recent years.
