The unique fruit, featuring a nearly flawless boundary line down the middle, was discovered in mid-May during a routine delivery of Red Braeburn apples. The lucky find occurred at the Sunshine Corner Market, located in Mairehau, a suburb of Christchurch.
Chimera apples are believed to be an extraordinary rarity, with scientists estimating that such mutations occur in fewer than one in a million fruits. This phenomenon is the result of a spontaneous genetic glitch during the earliest stages of the fruit's development. The apple begins to grow simultaneously from cells containing two completely different genetic backgrounds responsible for pigmentation, causing the fruit to literally split into two entirely distinct halves.
The store's owner, Heather, admitted that within just a few days, the bi-colored apple has become something of a local celebrity. "People have gone home, told their other half, and they haven't believed them, so they've come back with them. Lots of people are really excited and have taken photos of it—it's just captured people's imagination."
Heather added that this is the first time she has ever laid eyes on such a wonder of nature, despite her family having been in the produce business for a very long time.
The unusual fruit has even started to spark local urban legends. According to Heather, some superstitious customers are now specifically coming into the market to ask if they can touch the apple for luck before entering contests or buying lottery tickets.
For the time being, the life of this unique piece of fruit has been successfully extended by keeping it inside a refrigerator. However, Heather notes that the moment of truth is fast approaching: in the coming days, the shop owners will have to make a tough call—whether to find a way to permanently preserve the apple for history, or to finally slice it open to see what this genetic anomaly looks like from the inside.
