World’s Longest Asymmetric Bridge, Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, Opens in Taiwan

Taiwan has officially commissioned a unique infrastructure marvel—the Danjiang Bridge. As of today, it stands as the world’s longest single-tower, asymmetric cable-stayed bridge. Stretching 920 meters in length, the structure surpasses the height of Dubai’s famous Burj Khalifa skyscraper (828 m).

The mega-structure, which spans the mouth of the Tamsui River in Taipei, was designed by the legendary architecture firm Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA).

Architecture That Preserves Sunsets

The mouth of the Tamsui River is an iconic location where capital residents traditionally gather to admire the panoramic sunset. Preserving this natural vista was a key objective for the designers.

To prevent the bridge from blocking the horizon, the architects designed just a single pylon standing 200 meters tall. The tower was made as sleek and slender as possible, yet engineers guarantee its absolute resilience against violent storms and the frequent earthquakes characteristic of the region.

"We fundamentally did not want to frame the sun within concrete structures. The sunset view had to remain sacred," explained Charles Walker, the project's lead architect.

The bridge’s asymmetry is driven not only by aesthetics but also by the challenging local topography, which features an uneven riverbed and rolling hills on one of the banks. Furthermore, the decision to eliminate multiple intermediate piers allowed builders to leave the estuary’s ecosystem—an important natural reserve—virtually undisturbed.

Taiwan's new bridge is also built with the future in mind. In addition to vehicular lanes, it features dedicated pedestrian walkways and cycling paths, and the structure itself has been pre-engineered to accommodate the future expansion of the Danhai Light Rail transit lines.
