Levi’s Goes Haute Couture: Denim with an Estimated $20,000 Price Tag

Can you wear jeans to a black-tie event? Now you can… at least in Paris, the NYP reports. That is because acclaimed French designer Christelle Kocher launched a denim collection in partnership with Levi’s just ahead of Haute Couture Week.

Jeans for the Price of a Mortgage

Naturally, these jeans are a far cry from a pair you can pick up for the price of a six-pack of beer. While the exact cost of this Levi’s collaboration has not yet been announced, a typical pair of "casual" denim trousers from a couture collection can run anywhere from $10,000 to $30,000, according to a former Christian Dior VIP employee.

Kocher is best known as Chanel’s "secret weapon," responsible for highly intricate embroidery and appliqué work. She also helms her own insider brand, Koché, whose pieces have been worn by the likes of Beyoncé and Alicia Keys.

This week in Paris, the designer unveiled an 11-piece capsule blending her signature handmade chiffon and beaded French lace with jewel-encrusted cargo pants, sheer black flares, and white skater-style jeans. Speaking to Vogue, Kocher described the look as an "explosion of floral, denim, and feathers."

Challenging Haute Couture History

Karyn Hillman, Levi’s Senior Vice President and Chief Product Officer, noted they chose Kocher because "she has a rare ability to take something familiar and make it entirely new," calling the collection a "canvas for fashion expression."

The move also pays homage to the history of Haute Couture: 30 years ago, Jean Paul Gaultier caused a major scandal by sending handmade jeans down the runway for the first time.

Lately, denim has been making a comeback on the couture runways of Balenciaga and Mugler. Supermodel Kaia Gerber even opened a Valentino show in crystal-embroidered, loose-fitting jeans—an insider from the fashion house valued that specific pair at around $40,000. It's also worth noting that Levi’s previously tested the high-fashion waters back in 2021 with a small collaboration alongside Miu Miu.

Levi’s could not provide The Post with an exact price for their new couture denim, hinting only that they "may eventually be made available for special order." However, it is a safe bet that the price will easily rival an average American’s monthly mortgage payment.
