Melania Trump Demands Sanctions Against Journalist Michael Wolff Over Attempt to Avoid $1 Billion Lawsuit

The First Lady of the United States has asked a federal court to sanction journalist Michael Wolff, who attempted to preemptively sue her to avoid a $1 billion defamation lawsuit.

Melania Trump has urged the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York to impose sanctions on author and journalist Michael Wolff. In a 26-page legal motion, Trump's attorneys demand that the author of the famous bestseller Fire and Fury cover all legal fees and expenses incurred by the First Lady.

"Turned the Lawsuit into a Political Spectacle"

The conflict began after Melania Trump's lawyer, Alejandro Brito, sent Wolff a formal letter demanding he retract statements linking the First Lady to convicted sex trafficking offender Jeffrey Epstein. Otherwise, Trump's defense team threatened the journalist with a $1 billion defamation lawsuit.

Instead of responding or issuing a retraction, Wolff preemptively sued Melania Trump last October, attempting to secure an early judicial validation of his claims.

"[Wolff] falsely accused Mrs. Trump in connection with Jeffrey Epstein's crimes, and when she demanded a retraction, he simply ran to a New York court to obtain an improper 'endorsement' of his statements. He promoted this lawsuit across his media platforms and used it to raise over $836,000," the Trump team's filing states.

Court Dismisses the Journalist's Lawsuit

In May, Manhattan federal judge Mary Kay Vyskocil dismissed Wolff's lawsuit in its entirety, describing his legal logic as "distorted almost beyond recognition."

"The plaintiff is asking for a declaration that if the First Lady sues him, he should win. Federal courts do not work that way," Judge Vyskocil sharply concluded in her ruling.

Demanding Sanctions for "Abuse of Process"

Melania Trump's lawyers now insist that Wolff and his attorneys should face penalties regardless of whether the court ultimately deems his statements defamatory:

• Using the Court for Harassment: The lawsuit was inherently baseless and filed with the sole purpose of publicly pressuring the First Lady.

• Bad Faith: Wolff's actions were described as a classic example of "abuse of process" and forum shopping (seeking the most favorable court for oneself).

Context and Ties to Epstein

Melania Trump categorically denies any ties to Jeffrey Epstein, who died in a Manhattan jail cell in 2019 while awaiting trial. Previously, the First Lady secured a public apology and a retraction from The Daily Beast over similar allegations.

At the same time, according to documents declassified by the U.S. Department of Justice, Michael Wolff himself exchanged over 1,000 messages with Epstein up until the financier's arrest in 2019 and had publicly referred to him as a "good friend."
