From "Shut Up" to Full Apology: How 16 Million TikTok Views Taught Italian Tourists a Lesson in Manners

The confrontation unfolded on the BTS SkyTrain. A local commuter asked the noisy group of Italian students to keep it down, explaining: "In Thailand, we don't shout."

When the woman asked where they were from, the teens mockingly replied, "From Thailand," before hurling insults and making explicit gestures.

Rather than stepping in to correct the students, their teacher joined the argument, sarcastically declaring: "Sorry we brought money to your country. Shut up, they're just kids."

Social Media Backlash and Hotel Confrontation

The video blew up across social media, drawing fierce criticism both within Thailand and globally:

• "No one is against your money, but bring some manners with you next time," one user commented.

• "Bringing money to Thailand doesn't make you gods," added another.

Outraged netizens quickly tracked down the teenagers' identities and bombarded their school's social media pages with negative comments. A few local residents even turned up outside the group's hotel, demanding an in-person apology.

Diplomatic Intervention

To diffuse the growing conflict, the Italian Embassy in Bangkok got involved, releasing an official video featuring apologies from both the group leaders and the students involved.

In the clip, the teachers and one student bow deeply, addressing their apologies to the Thai people: "I personally offer my deepest apologies for what happened. I know that respect cannot be bought with money, and I am deeply sorry that we disrespected Thai culture," one of the chaperones said.

The second adult added that they do not condone the students' behavior, confirming the teens were being sent straight back to Italy to face disciplinary action and cultural awareness guidance.
