OpenAI’s First Luxury Influencer Press Trip Triggers Massive Backlash

OpenAI organized its first exclusive press tour for digital creators, dubbed Summer Club, flying a cohort of popular influencers out to an elite nature retreat in upstate New York. Guests were treated to farm-to-table dinners, wellness activities (such as beekeeping workshops), painting classes, and hands-on tutorials on utilizing OpenAI products, including the new ChatGPT Work service.

However, instead of producing widespread praise and polished aesthetic content, participating influencers were hit with an unprecedented wave of online backlash across social media.

Why Are Summer Club Attendees Facing Backlash?

Aesthetic and lighthearted videos on TikTok and Instagram were quickly flooded with angry commentary:

Several attendees were so unprepared for the intense public hostility that they hastily deleted their posts. One influencer wrote on LinkedIn: "I didn't think for a second this would cause such a scandal. I simply wanted to show useful tips for working with the technology."

OpenAI's Official Statement

In response to an inquiry from TechCrunch, OpenAI representative Drew Pusateri stated that the company actively collaborates with creators to educate the public on practical AI capabilities in an accessible way:

"Creators are a vital part of our community. We welcome healthy debate as AI continues to expand, and we appreciate creators who ask tough questions and learn alongside everyone else. We will continue to engage with them just as we do with traditional media."
