21:17 13 August, 2026Although rare whiskies typically rule the ultra-premium spirits segment, truly luxurious and collectible tequila releases emerge in the market from time to time. A striking example is the new release from 1800 Tequila—the brand has introduced an extra añejo priced at $11,000, issued in a strictly limited run of just 50 bottles, reports Robb Report.
1800 Tequila has been produced since the late 1960s, when the Beckmann family (who also control Jose Cuervo, Maestro Dobel, and Irish whiskey Bushmills) first introduced their añejo. Today, the brand's lineup includes blanco, reposado, cristalino, and flavored expressions. However, this new release falls into the extra añejo category, meaning it has been aged for a minimum of three years.
Titled Mono Laberinto Doble, the new release is part of the prestigious 1800 Colección Tequila series. The primary reason for the steep price tag lies not just in the age of the spirit, but in its unique collector's packaging: the tequila is housed in a nickel decanter created by the renowned Mexican artist and designer Pedro Friedeberg, who passed away last spring. This project stands as one of his final works.
"Pedro’s work has always existed at the intersection of imagination, identity, and heritage," noted Patrick Charpenel, executive director of El Museo del Barrio. "Mono Laberinto Doble is more than a collectible; it is a tribute to the maestro's legacy."
According to the producer, the tequila is made from agave that undergoes slow thermal processing in traditional stone ovens. Following distillation, the spirit was aged for at least three years in new American oak casks with medium and heavy toast levels, as well as in French oak barrels previously used for Italian dry Amarone wine.
Official tasting notes promise a rich flavor profile with notes of oak, baked agave, honey, prunes, and a subtle hint of vanilla.
The launch of Mono Laberinto Doble coincides with the release of a new book, The Art of Tequila: Spirit of Mexico, published by Assouline.
Those looking to purchase the exclusive set can already place pre-orders on the official 1800 Tequila website.
