The Humiliating Reason Why the Pentagon Chief’s Wife Never Leaves His Side

She accompanies him almost everywhere, takes part in preparing public appearances, interviews with potential staffers and even attends some closed-door briefings.
According to The New York Times, the reason for such close involvement could be rather embarrassing for the Pentagon chief.
The newspaper reports that Hegseth relies on his wife as someone who can “keep him in check.” The issue is tied to his past, including allegations of alcohol abuse that became a serious concern during his confirmation process for defense secretary.
Sources say Jennifer has become one of her husband’s most influential advisers. She takes part in selecting staff, helps shape his public image and oversees many details of his work.
Her constant presence, however, has already begun to cause serious discontent inside the Pentagon.
During a U.S.-U.K. briefing on the exchange of military intelligence concerning Ukraine, British officials reportedly limited themselves to general information because Jennifer’s presence made them uncomfortable. A separate meeting without her was later held to discuss more sensitive details.
Former Pentagon press secretary John Ullyot also described an unusual experience he had with Jennifer. Instead of a routine introduction, she subjected him to a 40-minute interrogation, during which she asked “unexpectedly detailed and tough questions.”
Ullyot called the situation absurd, arguing that the defense secretary’s wife should not be involved in discussions of sensitive government matters, including information about a planned military operation.
“It’s crazy that the secretary of defense is involving his wife in official duties, including passing along details of an upcoming military operation, and yet faces no consequences,” he told The New York Times.
The Pentagon, however, has defended Jennifer. Department spokesman Sean Parnell described her as an “experienced leader” and a devoted military spouse, emphasizing that the department not only welcomes her current involvement but intends to involve her even more in its work in the future.
Hegseth himself has previously spoken about his wife in glowing terms. In a 2024 interview, he said Jennifer had “changed his life” and “saved” him, adding that he would not hold his current position without her.
The couple met in 2016, when both were working at Fox News and were married to other people. They married in 2019.
Jennifer has now effectively become the defense secretary’s constant shadow — so close, according to sources, that her presence is beginning to interfere with the work of one of the most secretive agencies in the United States.
