$2.5 Million Hypercar: Hennessey Blackbird Sells Out Within Hours

The company unveiled the car to the public at The Quail automotive event in Monterey, California. By the time of its official debut, 60 of the 71 cars had already been allocated, while the remaining 11 sold out within just a few hours.

“None of us expected such an overwhelmingly positive response,” Hennessey founder John Hennessey said, noting that the lightning-fast sellout was a testament to the car’s striking design and the buyers’ appetite for exclusive hypercars.

The Blackbird is only the second vehicle Hennessey has developed entirely from the ground up. Inspired by the legendary Lockheed Martin SR-71 Blackbird reconnaissance aircraft, it serves as the successor to the Venom F5.

Unlike its predecessors, the Blackbird focuses not only on extreme performance but also on comfort. The body is made primarily from carbon fiber, while the cabin deliberately does away with touchscreens in favor of traditional analog controls.

Under the hood sits a naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 producing up to 900 horsepower. The engine can rev all the way to 9,000 rpm.

With a starting price of $2.5 million, the Blackbird is clearly aimed at the world’s wealthiest collectors. And even those lucky enough to secure one will have to wait several years: deliveries are not expected to begin until 2029–2030.

For now, prospective owners will have plenty of time to wait — because the opportunity to buy a new Blackbird is already gone. All 71 examples have been sold.
