Escape From Civilization: Why the World’s Wealthiest Are Choosing the Wilderness Over Luxury Resorts

Riksgränsen, a tiny village of around 60 people, is Sweden’s northernmost ski resort and a winter haven for adrenaline seekers. Located just 200 kilometers from the Arctic Circle, the remote outpost has become a playground for financiers, tech moguls and top executives who prefer helicopters to chairlifts and untouched slopes to crowded tourist resorts, according to Robb Report.

As ultra-wealthy travelers increasingly seek truly authentic experiences, remote destinations are climbing to the top of their wish lists.

Investors are pouring money into what the industry calls “experience-rich assets,” and since 2023, hundreds of high-end nature retreats and safari camps have opened around the world.

“The category is having a real moment,” says Lindsay Messina, co-founder of Fioraé Luxury Travel. “For people who have already stayed at the top hotels many times over, there’s a desire for something more intimate and deeply connected to a particular place.”

If glamping was once the pioneer of “wild” luxury travel, the trend has now evolved into genuine luxury wilderness camps. They combine traditional five-star service — including private butlers, chef-driven dining, spas and wellness programs — with complete seclusion and privacy.

A shift in priorities: privacy over prestige

The decision to trade familiar destinations such as the French Riviera or St. Barts for remote wilderness reflects one of the most important demands of today’s affluent travelers: privacy.

“In a hyperconnected world, we need to disconnect in order to reconnect with ourselves,” says Jason Scatriglia, founder of Your Favorite Travel Agent. “The modern traveler is beginning to realize that time is their most valuable asset, and privacy is non-negotiable.”

Major hotel brands such as Four Seasons, Aman and One&Only are also moving aggressively into the private villa and branded residence segment to meet growing demand for “quiet luxury” and secluded escapes immersed in nature.
