Beyond Time and Eras: The $500,000-Plus Watch Designed to Keep Time for 1,000 Years

Independent Swiss watchmaker Urwerk has never played by the traditional rules of horology. Now, the brand has reimagined one of its most ambitious concepts, unveiling a one-of-a-kind UR-1001 Amadeus pocket watch, according to Forbes.

Based on the earlier “Zeit Device” concept from the brand’s special-project series, the new creation pushes the boundaries of conventional timekeeping. The mechanism tracks not only seconds, minutes and hours, but also years, centuries and even an entire millennium. All of this futuristic mechanics is housed in a massive titanium case covered in elaborate, hand-executed Baroque engraving that looks as though it has arrived from an entirely different era.

The Architecture of Time: From Seconds to a Millennium

The front of the watch is a showcase of intricate indications:

• Satellite hours: A flying satellite positioned at 6 o’clock displays the hours, creating the illusion that it is floating through space.
• Annual calendar: At 12 o’clock, a system of three orbital arms cycles through the months and dates, accounting for the varying lengths of the months — 28, 30 or 31 days.
• Additional indications: The dial also features a hand-painted day/night indicator and a 39-hour power-reserve display.

Turn over the massive 106-by-62mm timepiece and an entirely different scale of time comes into view. Alongside Urwerk’s signature five-year “Oil Change” service indicator, the caseback houses two long-term counters:

1. A 100-year mechanical counter.
2. A millennium counter. At the end of each century, the 100-year mechanism sends an impulse to the 1,000-year counter.

Titanium Baroque and 500 Hours of Handcraft

Urwerk’s futuristic mechanics are surrounded by extraordinarily intricate Baroque engraving executed by master engraver Florian Güllert. The result is a surreal contrast between avant-garde engineering and centuries-old artistic heritage.

The engraver’s achievement is even more remarkable because he was working not with a malleable precious metal, but with titanium — a material notoriously difficult to manipulate with such fine handwork.

Güllert first cut the contours using a laser before moving on to the painstaking process of hand engraving and finishing.

The project took nearly three months and required around 500 hours of meticulous work, including the creation of reliefs, openworked sections and a combination of textured, matte and satin-finished surfaces.

In Honor of a “Genius Madman”

Urwerk co-founder Felix Baumgartner revealed that the name “Amadeus” — a tribute to Mozart, whom Baumgartner describes as an avant-garde artist and a “genius madman” — was chosen after the watch had been completed.

The name perfectly captures the spirit of the creation. The UR-1001 Amadeus simultaneously looks to the past and the future, encasing cutting-edge mechanics in centuries-old artistic ornamentation — a mechanism designed to contemplate time on a scale that no living owner today will ever witness in full.
