14:40 31 August, 2026“Days of Thunder” star Randy Quaid has sparked an uproar following news that Anne Hathaway has joined Tom Cruise in the long-awaited sequel to the cult racing drama, Variety reports.
The actor, who played NASCAR team owner Tim Daland in the original film, said the filmmakers should have brought back Nicole Kidman — Cruise’s on-screen love interest in the first movie.
“We need Nicole Kidman,” Quaid wrote on X on Saturday. He then addressed Tom Cruise directly: “Don’t be a coward. You need the original girl. It’s not personal — it’s a movie.”
Quaid didn’t stop there, taking an especially harsh swipe at Anne Hathaway, whose casting in the sequel was recently announced.
“Anne is not sexy because, in case you haven’t noticed, she’s pregnant,” the actor wrote.
Quaid later continued his attack in a separate post, arguing that Hathaway was a poor fit for a movie aimed at the NASCAR audience.
“Anne Hathaway is left-wing, woke and a terrible choice for the ‘Days of Thunder’ audience, which is MAGA,” he wrote.
According to Quaid, the only choice for Tom Cruise’s older female co-star in the sequel should be Nicole Kidman.
“The sexy older woman for Tom in this movie should be Nicole,” the actor declared.
Quaid also questioned the sequel itself, suggesting that the studio may be rushing to get the project into production.
In the original “Days of Thunder,” Quaid played Tim Daland, the owner of a racing team who recruits young and ambitious driver Cole Trickle, played by Tom Cruise.
Nicole Kidman portrayed Dr. Claire Lewicki, the film’s romantic lead and Cruise’s love interest.
The new movie is currently scheduled to hit theaters in June 2028.
The sequel will arrive nearly 40 years after the original film.
