The Richest — Yet the Most Miserable: Insiders Reveal the Dark Side of Elon Musk’s Life

Elon Musk is the richest man in the world. And, apparently, the most miserable.

That is the bleak assessment relayed by filmmaker Alex Gibney, who cited the view of someone who worked closely with Musk. The upcoming documentary Musk was recently discussed in a preview by The Hollywood Reporter.

“Someone who worked very closely with Elon said to me, ‘He’s the most miserable person I’ve ever encountered.’ So he just kind of pours his misery out on everybody else,” Gibney told the publication.

Gibney’s film, which is set to premiere this fall, examines the darker side of the 55-year-old entrepreneur and explores how this largely unchecked figure has come to shape much of what we see in American politics today.

Musk has never hidden his appetite for political influence, particularly during the 2024 presidential campaign, when he poured more than $290 million into Donald Trump’s presidential bid and held rallies in battleground states.

In his documentary, Gibney also highlights Musk’s brief stint overseeing an army of twentysomethings known as the “DOGE” team. During that period, the group was linked to the dismantling of USAID programs around the world, while Musk, as the owner of X, gained access to the data of tens of millions of Americans.

What exactly he is doing with that information remains unknown. Combined with the vast amount of data he had already accumulated through his control of X, the access has made Musk an almost unrivaled force in American politics.

According to the source cited by Gibney, Musk is doing all of this in an attempt to fill the void he feels inside himself. At other times, he may try to fill that emptiness by lashing out at the people around him.
