Beyoncé Fans Accuse Singer of ‘Disgusting Greed’ Over $1,000 Empty Box

Beyoncé has one of the most fiercely loyal fan bases in the world. But this time, even her famously devoted Beyhive accused the superstar of a “disgusting display of greed” after she put an empty wooden box up for sale for nearly $1,000.

The pop icon marked her 45th birthday and the 20th anniversary of her iconic album B’Day in a rather unusual way — by unveiling the limited-edition Bey Keeper Collector’s Box. Only 500 boxes have been made, with each one priced at $948.01. And, to put it mildly, fans were not impressed.

A wave of outrage erupted on social media under posts from Parkwood Entertainment, Beyoncé’s company, with fans criticizing the singer for what they considered an outrageously expensive and pointless piece of merchandise.

One fan called it a “disgusting display of greed,” pointing out that Beyoncé’s fortune is estimated at around $1 billion.

Another wrote: “$1,000 and it’s an empty box. Beyoncé, have you lost your mind?!”

One more fan joked: “For that price, I want you to jump out of the box yourself and give me a concert.”

But it was the very concept of the product that left many fans most baffled.

The box is described as a collectible piece “designed to house and display your Beyoncé vinyl collection.” There is just one small catch: not a single record is included — not even the 20th-anniversary reissue of B’Day.

At least the price does have a symbolic explanation. Beyoncé was born on September 4, 1981, making $948.01 a reference to her birth date.

Some fans, however, found the logic less than convincing. If the price was supposed to reference the singer’s birthday, they argued, $94.81 would have made far more sense.

Another detail also left fans scratching their heads: the box is made from pine, which many consider to be a relatively inexpensive type of wood. The combination of a basic material and a nearly four-figure price tag made the product seem particularly absurd to some fans.

That said, Beyoncé did not leave her fans completely empty-handed for the anniversary. To mark the 20th anniversary of B’Day, she released an expanded edition of the album featuring 31 tracks.

The release includes several previously unreleased songs, including Lost Yo Mind, Creole, Back Up, My First Time and Can I Watch You, featuring Pharrell Williams.

But for many fans, one question remains: is an empty wooden box really worth nearly $1,000?
