Wedding Gift With a Scandalous Twist: Putin-Linked Billionaire Paid for Trump Jr.’s Celebration

Donald Trump Jr. and his wife, Bettina Trump, have publicly addressed for the first time reports that Russian businessman Umar Kremlev paid hundreds of thousands of dollars toward the expenses of their lavish wedding celebration in the Bahamas.

The president’s eldest son married 39-year-old socialite Bettina at a ceremony in Palm Beach in late May, after which the newlyweds headed to the Caribbean, where they held a lavish celebration.

Donald Trump did not attend his son’s wedding, citing national security duties amid escalating tensions over the war with Iran. The heightened tensions in the Middle East also forced the couple to significantly scale back their original plans to hold the wedding at the White House.

According to reports that have emerged, Umar Kremlev, a wealthy Russian businessman linked to Russian President Vladimir Putin, covered some of the costs of the celebrations. As reported by the Daily Mail, he provided financial assistance to the couple, including paying for the rental of the private island of Little Pipe Cay, fireworks and other expenses totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars. Kremlev’s team was also reportedly involved in organizing the wedding party.

After the reports emerged, Bettina decided to put the rumors to rest herself. She posted a series of previously unpublished photos and referred to Kremlev as “our dear friend Umar.”

According to Bettina, the Russian businessman “very generously hosted two incredible nights of celebrations,” but she stressed that the party he paid for took place after their wedding.

“Don and I secretly got married on Friday, surrounded by ONLY our family. It was an intimate, deeply personal and one of the most beautiful days of our lives,” she wrote.

Bettina explained that the weekend that followed had been planned in advance as a getaway with friends.

“It was never supposed to be our wedding weekend. When our original wedding plans changed, we simply decided to get married before that and came to the already-planned weekend as newlyweds,” she explained.

According to Bettina, Kremlev hosted two nights of celebrations for them after the official ceremony.

“It was an incredibly generous wedding gift from a friend — and we were and remain tremendously grateful to him,” she said.

Bettina also pushed back strongly against attempts to link the gift to politics.

“It’s unfortunate that something so personal and happy can be portrayed as political or sinister simply because of who this person is or where he comes from. Friendship does not require political motives. Generosity does not necessarily mean there is some kind of agenda. And sometimes a wedding gift is simply a wedding gift,” she wrote.

Bettina also revealed some details about the celebration. Only 18 guests attended the actual wedding ceremony, while around 50 people attended the subsequent celebration in the Bahamas.

Concluding her emotional statement, she added: “We are so fortunate to have wonderful friends from all over the world, and we will never be ashamed or apologize for being grateful to them.”

“So, for anyone determined not to let facts get in the way of a good story: NO CONSPIRACY, NO SECRET. Just a private family wedding, a wonderful weekend with friends and one hell of a party,” Bettina wrote.

Donald Jr.’s siblings, Eric and Ivanka Trump, were also with the couple at the wedding and subsequent celebrations. A representative for Eric, however, said that he “absolutely has no idea who this person is and has never heard his name.”

Meanwhile, reports that the Russian businessman effectively paid for Donald Jr.’s lavish wedding party have already attracted the attention of Democrats on the House Committee on Oversight.

Congressman James Walkshaw wrote on X: “A Putin-linked Russian oligarch secretly financed Don Jr.’s lavish wedding. People in Putin’s orbit don’t spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on the president’s family for no reason. What did he expect in return? We need answers.”

Another member of the committee, Robert Garcia, also questioned the payments: “Why did a Putin-linked Russian oligarch finance Trump Jr.’s wedding in the Bahamas? Umar Kremlev spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on the president’s son. What did he get in return? We need answers.”

The statements came amid a broader investigation by Democrats into Trump and his family’s finances. That same day, the committee announced hearings on what it described as “Trump corruption,” accusing the president of using his position to enrich himself, his family and his inner circle.

The private island where the celebration took place has its own airstrip with customs facilities for private aircraft. It is described as an exclusive, members-only destination featuring luxury villas, private yachts and secluded beaches. Guests are provided with personal butler services.

The island can only be reached by chartered plane or boat. Accommodation starts at around $1,400 per person per night — a price that, according to the publication, helps ensure maximum privacy for guests.

However, the island has a highly controversial history. It once served as a headquarters for Pablo Escobar’s Medellín drug cartel. Between 1978 and 1982, it was used as a base for smuggling by cartel kingpin Carlos Lehder.
