Madonna Returns to the MTV VMAs in Triumph at 68, While Taylor Swift Takes Home the Night’s Top Award

Madonna and Taylor Swift were the undisputed stars of the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, with Madonna winning three awards during the live broadcast, while Swift took home the evening’s top honor, further cementing her status as the most decorated artist in VMA history.

This year’s ceremony was largely a celebration of female performers. Madonna arrived with a record-breaking 13 nominations — more than any other artist — and ultimately took home seven awards. Three were presented during the televised broadcast: Best Collaboration, for her work with Sabrina Carpenter; Best Dance Video; and Artist of the Year.

Accepting the latter award, the 68-year-old pop icon reminded the audience that her first-ever performance at the MTV VMAs took place 43 years ago.

“Most of you probably weren’t even born when I performed at the very first VMAs 43 years ago,” she said.

Madonna also recalled one of the most awkward moments of her career, when she famously fell during a performance and accidentally exposed her backside — an incident that nearly derailed her career at the time, particularly in a very different media landscape.

The singer ended her speech on a more serious note.

“I’ve spent the last year and a half trying to rediscover myself, believe in myself, and really make the music that I wanted to make,” she said. “I hope that each and every one of you tonight will do the same. Find yourself and believe in yourself.”

Madonna, whose provocative performances in the 1980s helped establish the VMAs as one of the year’s biggest cultural events, opened the ceremony at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater. It marked her first appearance at the VMAs in 23 years, following her iconic onstage kiss with Britney Spears in 2003.

The singer performed two tracks from her album Confessions II, released this summer: Bring Your Love, featuring Sabrina Carpenter, and the high-energy Danceteria, a tribute to New York City’s club scene of the 1980s. Charli XCX joined her for the latter performance, while actress Julia Garner — who was set to portray Madonna in the long-discussed biopic — was among the dancers. The film was ultimately shelved following a dispute between the singer and Universal Studios.

Taylor Swift took home three awards, including the night’s biggest prize, Video of the Year, for The Fate of Ophelia. She also became the first recipient of the newly introduced Artist Director Honors, an award recognizing “groundbreaking musical artists whose work behind the camera has expanded the possibilities of music video.”

Swift dedicated her win to the “ultimate showwoman,” Dolly Parton, who died last month at the age of 80 after being diagnosed with cancer.

Kacey Musgraves also paid tribute to Parton, performing I Will Always Love You alongside archival footage of the late singer. The emotional performance visibly moved the audience.

Later in the evening, Sombr, RAYE, Teddy Swims and Adam Lambert performed hits from George Michael’s Faith tour, marking 10 years since the British singer’s death at the age of 53.

After reflecting on her 20 years in the music industry and nearly 60 music videos — 18 of which she had written and directed herself — Swift introduced the premiere of her new video for Patient Zero, the lead single from The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore.

Snoop Dogg hosted the ceremony for the first time. The rapper, however, remained largely in the background for much of the evening, maintaining his trademark laid-back demeanor.

As in previous years, the 2026 ceremony was largely dominated by female artists. K-pop star Lisa won Best Pop Video for Dream, while British newcomer Sienna Spiro was named Best New Artist. The winner in that category was chosen by viewers voting throughout the ceremony.

The Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, which honors outstanding contributions to the art of music video, went to Nirvana, recognizing the legendary grunge band’s influence on the medium.

Among the awards presented outside the televised broadcast, K-pop group BTS won Best Group and Best K-pop, as well as Song of the Year for Swim. Bruno Mars took home the R&B award for I Just Might, while Cardi B and Kehlani won Best Hip-Hop for Safe. Bad Bunny claimed the Latin category with NUEVAYoL, Olivia Rodrigo won Best Alternative for The Cure, and Ella Langley took home Best Country for her record-breaking hit Choosin’ Texas.
