Silvana Armani Breaks Giorgio’s Rules: The New Giorgio Armani Collection Pays Tribute to Family and Marks the Start of a New Era

Silvana Armani has given the collection a deeply personal character, paying tribute in her own way to her legendary uncle, Giorgio Armani.

Her second prêt-à-porter collection for the house that Giorgio Armani founded, led and personally shaped for half a century is titled Evolution. And now, the designer clearly intends to take the brand in her own direction.

At the show at Armani/Teatro, Silvana even took a historic step for the fashion house: for the first time, she sent cotton garments down the runway — a material her uncle would never have approved of.

“He didn’t like it. He thought it was too simple and humble a material. But I love cotton, so I added it,” the designer told WWD.

The runway featured loose, wide-legged cotton trousers and roomy knee-length shorts. They were paired with everything from lightweight hooded jackets to blazers with pronounced broad shoulders, inspired by Giorgio Armani’s archival silhouettes from the 1980s.

But Silvana’s most personal touch came from looking through the family photo album.

A bomber jacket appeared on the runway decorated with a portrait of Giorgio Armani in a tuxedo printed directly onto the fabric. The designer then recreated her famous uncle’s first suit, which he wore for his First Communion. The company later shared a black-and-white photograph of Giorgio wearing the very same outfit on the day of the celebration.

The dark double-breasted suit was impossible to miss on a runway designed to resemble a city square. It was completed with a tie — now something of a rarity for Armani — white gloves and a boutonnière on the lapel. The buttoned-up front, welt pockets and relaxed trousers gave the look a distinctive elegance.

Such a suit would work not only for a formal ceremony, but also for a wedding, bar mitzvah or confirmation.

Suits, long one of Armani’s signatures, were among the collection’s key focal points. Jackets became longer and shoulders more pronounced, echoing the house’s iconic 1980s silhouettes. Paired with wide-leg trousers, these designs can strikingly flatter a wide range of body types.

Particularly eye-catching were the black and midnight-blue tuxedo jackets — a perfect match for luxurious evening gowns literally covered in shimmering details.

Eveningwear, as always, played an important role in the collection and showcased a broad range, from understated minimalism to unabashed glamour.

A sleek, restrained dress with a deep V-neckline at the front stood alongside far more dramatic creations. Cropped jackets covered in sequins shimmered as if coated in ice crystals. A white dress cascaded with long, loose fringe reminiscent of streams of water.

The true star was a sparkling look adorned with tiny butterflies on its delicate straps and clustered around the neckline.

Still, there is room for Evolution to evolve further. Some of the choices were less convincing: corsets worn over striking skirts and trousers looked too rigid and not particularly comfortable. And some of the slim trousers and a glittering jacket with wing-like sleeves leaned a little too literally into 1980s aesthetics.

But bringing together the past and the present, personal individuality and loyalty to a family legacy, is no easy task.
