Loro Piana Bets on Functionality: Luxury That Knows How to Work

Functionality has become one of Milan’s new fashion themes, and Loro Piana was not about to stay on the sidelines. The brand titled its spring collection “Solutions For,” highlighting the strengths of pieces designed not simply to look beautiful, but to serve specific purposes: a camel blazer for its natural authority, a field jacket for its functional pockets, a duffle coat for its quick-fastening toggle closures, and a pleated skirt for the freedom of movement it provides.

With its emphasis on functionality and specific real-life scenarios, the collection focused largely on country escapes and outdoor pursuits, including golf. Certain color combinations and floral prints added a distinctly British mood.

If the collection lacked a certain sense of modernity, surprise and youthful energy, that was more than compensated for by its meticulous craftsmanship and an abundance of exceptional fabrics that quietly and flawlessly fulfilled their primary purpose. Tellingly, the word “luxury” did not appear even once in the three extensive press releases devoted to the collection.

And that philosophy was unmistakable in the details. A Donegal tweed blazer felt smooth and almost cool to the touch. A dark navy knit set made from the brand’s signature Royal Lightness wool-and-silk blend had a natural stretch, while a men’s suede jacket seemed to melt beneath the fingers when the sleeve was touched.

Among the bolder offerings was a half-zip sweater in seersucker fabric, along with bombers made from technical silk. The evening looks, deliberately far removed from both tuxedos and ball gowns, were equally convincing.
